- Ηη, [full] ἦτα (q.v.), τό, indecl., eighth (later seventh) letter of the Gr. alphabet; as numeral ή,= ὀκτώ and ὄγδοος, but ἡνυμ,= 8,000. In most local alphabets of v B.C. and earlier it representsA h, in others (incl. the [dialect] Ion.= later general Gr. alphabet) one of the long ē sounds (cf. βῆ βῆ).
